Way to select from table where cells are empty

Right now I am using the is NOT NULL, to select fields that have something in them. However when some of the data is dumped in the NULL is not getting put in there, I have the cell set to default NULL, but sometime is puts nothing in there. Is there another way to select only the fields that have something in them.
