Image resizing without imagecreatetruecolor()

So, I set up a nice php script for creating thumbs on my website, ran it, and after much troublshooting discovered that my server doesn't have the absolute latest version of GD. So, I can't use imagecreatetruecolor(). I've talked with my system admin for my server, and what it comes down to is he's a bit lazy. So, what do I do? Is there another way to resize images in php?

I've used ImageCreate() in the past, and it seems to be a very bad alternative. I've had problems where it doesn't quite get the color palate properly, and it creates and image that looks whited out. It makes it pretty much useless for resizing.
