[RESOLVED] dynamic users

hi there,

i am setting up an intranet in a dorm, and thought it would be cool if the users could make their own blogs. now, everything will be going off one server. so can anyone recommend a software, or a way to alter other software, so that someone on the intranet can log in, sign up, and create their own blog?

i don't even know what to google for on such a question.

Are you going to be using php and MySQL? If so there are many out there:

bblog
wordpress
moveable type

to name a couple off the top of my head. Just google for "php blog" or "php weblog".

and those allow other users to sign in and create their own? rather than me setting one up individually for everyone?

Why don't you create your own PHP/MySQL solution?

It's always better than using a pre-made script 😉

Edit: I probably shouldn't have said that. Now a flame way might start up over the debate of whether or not it's better to code your own (pro: you know how it works, easy to debug; con: "reinvent the wheel", lots of time) or take some pre-made solution (pro: easier to set-up initially [and perhaps easier to maintain]; con: could cost a lot of money, harder to debug & understand when things go wrong). Sorry if your post turns into a flame war 😃!

Actually, Intranet-Journal has a great article they did over the span of 6 months last year on building a CMS. It might help you get started in "real-world" PHP programming, as well as good program design. Available at http://www.intranetjournal.com/php-cms/

Also, look at http://www.sitepoint.com/ for some great articles, as well as two great books from them - The PHP Anthology (Volumes 1 & 2), and Building a Dynamic Website with PHP & MySQL.

Finally, the very first site from which I was introduced to PHP was a Lycos site called "Code Monkey" or something like that. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find it. Although most of all, I'd reccomend getting some good books, and trying out the programs explained in the books. They're very helpful!

Webmonkey I think you mean above, that's where I got my feet wet. They've got quite a nice fun style, too. Beware HTTP_GET_VARS and all that, though - it's all $GET and $POST nowadays. Oh, and 'register globals' shall be thy bane.
