Install win98 on winXP pc

Hey guys,

Can anyone help me in finding some information on how to install win98 on a pc which already has winXP (i.e, dualboot)

I'm asking this question only for my knowledge sake

Usually you need to install the W9x or earlier windows system 1st, then when you install XP it will set up your computer to dual-boot either version. I recommend using seperate hard disks for each OS if you really want to use 2 versions of windows on one box.

I do not know if you can add W9x as a dual-boot OS to an existing XP computer.

I seeem to recall a similiar restriction on this setup... also winXP has the bootloader that handles dual booting of preinstalled OS's + XP so it simplifies the process 😉

they do NOT have to be on seperate disk drives, but it is the smart thing to do (so long as you leave the partion FAT32 since 9x isnt NTFS compatible.... if not on seperate hard disks, atleast use 2 partitions and if you wish to keep your current setup get a program like Norton GHOST to back up you drive (you should be doing backups regardless 😉)

when trying to install win98 on a pc which is running WinXP before installation is started scandisk is started.later you get a error message stating that DOS partition not found and so installation failed.

But then I heard that it is possible to install win98 by deleting a logical partition and later by running a third party software like PQMAGIC to install win98.

Now if I'm able to install in this way, then after the installation is finished I dont think I will be able to logon to both the OS's.

By using recovery console and running fixboot will this problem be solved?

And eventhough you have FAT32 partition in your winXP you still wont be able to install win98 without deleting a logical partition.

Though I'm not sure about this but this is what I heard from a friend of mine.

If you go the two disk route, you could put the new disk only in the cpu, install W98, then add as a 2nd disk to the xp disk, make the W98 disk be the slave drive and the original XP disk be the primary boot disk.

Then you can manually edit the boot.ini file on the boot disk and add the w98 disk as one of the boot options. I did this once adding a W98 drive from one computer as a 2nd drive on a W2K Pro computer, and it worked for me.

There are websites dedicated to bootdisks and this kind of stuff.

I dunno, I'm just offering suggestions. I get 2nd disks at the store myself 🙂

If it's convinient, you could try a live cd! Im a bit of a noob to this kinda thing so I dont know if u can do that with windows 😃

you can do a boot disk that has a wi ndows environment on it, here's a link to one such program that allows it, be warned, it didn't sound very straight forward or simple
