should I have one query that gets all the data from the database and then sort then group the stuff out using php

or

have 4 seperate queries that get the data already sorted?

This is hard to answer without knowing the table structure, how they link together, how much data in each, and what has indexes or not. In a lot of cases, you just have to give both a whirl and see which one runs better.

From my experience, you want to try to toss everything into one query (if done right, you can even do the grouping and sorting within the query by using subqueries). But depending on your setup, breaking a monster query down into simpler queries may be the way to go in some cases (I find this to be rare, but sometimes it helps).

here is the query right now

SELECT h.* , t.tee_color_id, t.yards, t.hole_id, t.handicap, c.color
FROM hole h, tee t, tee_color c
WHERE h.course_id = " . $course . " 
AND t.hole_id = h.id 
AND t.tee_color_id = c.id
ORDER BY c.color, hole_num

the $course variable is passed along and already localised at this point

basically the way it needs to be outputted is like a golf scorecard basically

hole number 1-18
red yardages 1-18
white yardages 1-18
blue yardages 1-18

however here is where the tricky part for me is I only want to show the blue(or red, or white) if there are entries in it and let's say it only has 9 entries then I want the other 9 <td>'s to show up empty to keep formatting of the table complete.

Does that make it any clearer?
