Check out Larry Ullmans series of MYSQL books, I just got done with his book on php and mysql. Its awesome with sweet content examples and extras that can help you even when you are done with the book!

Seriously, try the MySQL manual or check out some books. Better yet, check out books on SQL in general and database design (look up "normalization") because those can be applied to any DB.

Fully understand all the joins,

the difference between ON and WHERE and HAVING (lots of people balls these up)

Indexing, using EXPLAIN to find out just how your SELECTs are working, then possibly having to force an index if it's being stupid

Transactions, and emulating them if you don't have the right table types available

I learned some solid basics from SQLZoo.net. It's an interactive tutorial that really pounds the essentials of joins and compound selects into your brain.
