OK, no worries. Just seemed like an awfully open question, and I just like to state the obvious :p
An news items script is not hard to write yourself.. (see added files.. Not the nicest code I have written, but it works for me)
A calender.. Is somewhat tricky to program by yourself, and not for the beginner, looking at easily adding features to their site.. There you'd need some solid ideas of the date functions, selects and arrays.
