Checking user having multiple accounts via IP

Hi all,

I have tried to use $_SERVER[REMOTE_ADDR] to determine the IP address of the user upon logging in. I then insert this IP and the username into the database. My intention is to use this database to check who are the users that login using the same terminal...

However, i did a test on my local terminal and log in twice....the IP address recorded is different...i though the IP is the same if i log on using the same terminal, is it not 😕

As i'm also unsure about this network and IP relationship. I will appreciate any comments / help from anyone. Thank you.

ip's are pretty unreliable when it comes to this stuff. for instance, im at work now. we have around 400-450 pc's here. from the outside we would all be sharing the same ip. allot of big isp's also operate this way.

I also believe that comcast and aol use different ip addresses each time one of their user's logs on, so that isn't reliable for them either...

🙁 Then in case, I think i can't monitor the IP and see which users are using the same terminal...Does anyone have any experience in dealing this scenario ?

How can I check if users are using the same terminal? Further help / comment will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You could try just having an admin function that searchs a database for a given IP, and have the admin put the IP (..***) and match it up like that to see if multiple people are logging in from the same area. I don't think there is a way to be absolutly sure though.
