For a personal site which application is the ideal one?
phpBB ? Infopop?
I suppose vBulletin is surely for big sites though.
vBulletin isnt made especially for big sites the reason you probably see it used on big sites is because the small sites cannot afford it. Out of the free ones the only known is PHPBB, ive never heard of Infopop. PHPBB is good however there is a lot to be said about its security.

ahh..security problem is a big one...
infopop is now called Groupee, I visited its website just now ,the support say its a host service now.
You might want to check out opensourcecms.com - demos of the admin and regular user functions of many, many CMSs.
