Pattern Matching

Hi there,

I am just entering the world of pattern matching in PHP

I am finding it very confusing and would like to a ask a couple of questions..

1. Can anyone tell me the pattern required to split a string using preg_split using colons, fullstops or commas as the delimter...

No matter, i answered my first question through trial and error.
its

preg_split('[:|\.|,]',$string);

So what would be the pattern for all/any non-numeric character as a delimter?

2. Does anyone know of any good beginner tutorials on this subject?

1.[^\d] match all the non-number..

short form of [^\d] is \D

In your pattern I'd use a character class
[:.,]
rather than alternation
😐.|,
and choose a different pattern delimiter (in your pattern [ and ], most common / and /)

The [^\d] one didn't seem to work as i thought. (All non-numeric characters)
It doesn't make. (period) a delimter for some reason? Is that cuz its also a decimal point?

ANyway, i have binned the preg_split thing and i am using ereg_replace instead and doing it another way but i still need a string pattern that will strip out all non numeric charcters.

Basically, i am taking a field from a form where a TIME will have been typed. Because some people use
colons> 9:45
periods> 10.52
and even hyphens> 12-21 (dumbasses)

i need a pattern that will swap anything other than a number, to a colon.. 🙂
