Navigation and File Structuring

Hi There,

This is my first post to phpbuilder. I hope I can offer some advice aswell as receive it. :0)

I am fairly new to php, with lots of html, css, flash, asp, under my belt.

My main issues are currently "conceptual" let's say.

I am interested in points of view regarding Layout and files structuring.

For example, currently, my mind is using php like html. I make one page, link some content, then make another page, link some content and link the main pages together. Ending with Four Files.

:rolleyes: What if this could be done with 3 files (1php, 2txt). Instead of linking to a seperate page, the content would be loaded (or swapped) into the original page. (Thereby encorporating the power of frames)

Q: Is it possible to run swap included-content type operations on a single php file or must there always be a third "perform-action" file?

Ok, from what I understood to do the content-loading or swapping you need the include() functionality of PHP and similar functions. Check the manual for include, include_once, require and require_once. 'Cause this is what you can do:

// file index.php
echo "<html><head>... etc";
require_once 'some_file.any_extension';
echo "</body></html>";

Now you create this "some_file.any_extension" file and its contents will appear on the index.php page, and it can even include php code.

As far as I can see in the code you would still need a seperate executeable page.

Nope. THe execution is done first, and the output is produced afterwards. I'd suggest having a look at the fixed messages at the start of the newbies thread.

in general:

In one page:

-> detect which paramaters were set
-> process information accordingly (e.g. get include file)
-> Output the page for the user to view
