PHP percentages

Hi, im a bit stuck on how to write s sum in PHP.

Heres what im trying to do, ive got the variable $discount, which is either 5, 10 or 15 depending on how much is entered into a form and ive got a $totalamount which does a few sums to get its value.

I want to do the following sum but i don't know how to write it:

$result = $totalamount - $discount as a percent

eg £175,000 - 5%

But how do i turn $discount into a percent?!
