strip out date from file name?

Hi guys. I struggling with this one. I'm trying to extract the date part of the file below. How can I do it??
db96569254-20050729-1815.gz

$parts = explode('-', $filename);
echo $parts[1];

//or

preg_match('/-(\w{8})-/', $filename, $match);
echo $match[1];
?>

first one is surely faster as long as thats always the format of the filenames.
