PHP on Linux & creating an excel file

Is this even possible?
We run PHP on a Linux server.
One of our biz dev people need us to dynamically create an excel spreadsheet for them.

a. is there a plugin for php on linux for that?
b. is there a plugin for any type of excel like product i.e. openoffice?
