Paypal IPN with Shopping Cart

I was wondering what the best approach to using paypal to complete a shopping cart order. Does Paypal return to the IPN variables containing all the items in the cart, and if so, how do I find out what they are? If not, how do you keep track of what merchandise was bought and how do you update your inventory... do you use sessions or soemthing?

If you havent already, you should read the Order Management Integration Guide from PayPal which describes all the return data sent when you use shopping carts and the IPN. It is https://www.paypal.com/en_US/pdf/PP_OrderManagement_IntegrationGuide.pdf

Also you may want to sign up on the PayPal Developers Forums where you can communicate with people who are experts on IPN and how to use it.
