Is there anyway of bypassing the 4 letter word minimum?

We are trying to search a database with lots of 3 letter acnoymns and can't find any matching results.

Any help, much appreciated.

So it means altering the server configuration, something i wasn't prepared to do, as the site will be hosted externally.
