Anyone using Eclipse PHP?

I just started using Eclipse PHP and have to say I am pretty impressed. Not only is it packed with features, it is free. I still have to try the debugger though. If this works then I am sold. Anyone else here use this program? I ask because not many people seem to talk about it.

I cannot rate this editor enough, it is outstanding and I cant belive it took me so long to use it, my error rate is down, code prod is up, naviagtion is great.

I don't want to words in the man's mouth but I've got a funny feeling Shrike uses Eclipse. Most of the java guys in my office use it and apparently it really fscking shines with Java. The fact that it's built in the language probably has something to do with that :p

Yep you are right 😉

BigBadKev is absolutely right it's a great IDE, and latest version of PHPEclipse really shines too.

My one big gripe with Eclipse used to be that it was pretty annoying to get up and running, and it still is to an extent. They have made things a hell of a lot easier now by providing a GUI interface for installing the plugins (this includes PHPEclipse and the QuantumDB plugin).

Like most IDE's Eclipse provides intellisense hints as per Visual Studio - although I have to say I don't use it much (maybe I'm missing out). Another really useful feature is in-page debugging. If you try to use an unitialised variable, it'll tell you. If you write a parser error, it'll let you know. It also has PHP 5 support, class diagrams, an in-built browser, unit testing support...the list goes on. It's truly amazing that this product is free.

What is the home page for phpeclipse? I tried phpeclipse.com and it looks like a different IDE.

Interesting, it seems there is another PHP plugin for Eclipse - TruStudio.

I agree, setting up Eclipse and adding the plugins was very easy to do.

Is the class diagrams already in Eclipse or is this a plugin? If a plugin what is the name of it? Thanks!

If you open a PHP file with a class in it, it'll display a list of methods and properties of the class in the right hand pane...clicking on one takes you to the right line in the file. There are UML plugins for Eclipse but I've not played with any.

Ahh, I got it. I did notice that on the first day. Very nice. In the past I either had to do a Ctrl-F or just scroll down looking for the method I wanted to work with.

I installed this program once, came on a CD with other PHP related thingos.

I uninstalled it. I think I had problems getting something to work and/or it was just confusing. I don't like fart-arsing around.

Never used any other program except for Dreamweaver/Notepad...perhaps I should look into a specifically-for-PHP IDE. I think I tried out one of them once - it was called "M<something>" (Mambo? Mortar? It started with an M), and I liked it, but it couldn't preview PHP pages correctly - the IE plugin it used called the pages like this: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\page.php rather than http://localhost/page.php

Was it Maguma? I've tried loads of php editors, and have written reviews of about 12 of them but still haven't found anything better than just using Dreamweaver and either pressing F12 or just refreshing a window with the same script in it.

I know it's probably because I started with it and find it comfortable. All the rest have "ah - I don't like that" bits, but I've yet to try eclipse.

Yes, that's it! Maguma. I agree with you - Dreamweaver, and F5-ing the window (or tab) with the page in it. All the others have features which I like, and think can be utilized, but only after 2 days, they get in the way and I wind up uninstalling them. It's sort of like Konfabulator - the first time I heard of it - "wow! neat! widgets! so useful!" - two days later - "will this fscking widget get out of my way? it clutters my desktop!!".

Once I pick something, I stay with it and it's hard to get me to change. Except of course from IE -> Firefox. And Frontpage -> Dreamweaver. And Windows -> Linux.

There is also an LUA script plugin for Eclipse. Anybody here writing addons for World of Warcraft? I am putting the finishing touches on my DKP tracker/auction 🙂
