[RESOLVED] Base URL problems

My main page is going to be just "index.php".

All my other pages are going to be a subdirectory deep such as "keyword/page1.php".

I'm starting my page design and notice problems already.

I can have either the "index.php" or the "keyword/page1.php" working properly, but not both.

See the examples of my code:

For the second example to work properly, I have to add "../" to a few places in the code (as seen by the red places within the green).

Both files share the same template. Is there a way to get the template to be more universal so I don't have to have 2 templates?

You'll probably have to put the absolute path to the include files on your template...

so instead of ../../file.php....you would use /var/www/html/my_site/file.php

I was hoping php could make it easier. It's in testing right now on my computer with the WAMPP package and was hoping I could just upload it right to my server when I was done with it instead of changing all the 127.0.0.1 references to the new server.

Ooo... brain fart. I could change the spots to a $url and then define the $url somewhere I guess.

if you define $url somewhere....where ever you define it needs to be included on the pages....would that work?

If you have access to ssh or someting....you could create a config page in your home directory....in each subsequent directory, you could create a symbolic link back to that config page...then on each page, you could include(config.php) and actually include the same file without all the ../../ problems....it's a thought

I put

$url = "http://127.0.0.1/MYSERVERNAME/";

at the top of the template file.

I replaced my links in the page with $url as in so:

<LINK REL=StyleSheet HREF="<? print ($url); ?>stylesheets/stylesheet-main.css" type="text/css">

That worked.

But...

For this link it screws up:

<BR>
News:
<?php $_GET['zfposition']="$feeds"; include ('<? print ($url); ?>newsfeeds/zfeeder.php'); ?>
<BR>

I don't know how to get this one to work right.

For the includes and stuff you could use:

$basedir=$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']; // Would be eg. /home/user/www/public_html

# Includes in all the scripts like this
include($basedir.'/templates/templates-main-pages.php);

And to use images and others html-wise from basedir just put this:
<base href="http://www.yourwebsite.com">
..between head tags.

Excellent. I did the base url HTML thing and then did the PHP trick as well. I put them into a config.php file and now just have to alter the two lines when I do go live.

For the record, I had to put the file name onto the document root for changes to take place.

However, if I tried putting this $basedir into some folders I would get errors, so I had to prepend the files with "../" I don't see any forseeable conflicts when it goes live though.

$basedir=$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/MY_FILE_NAME_HERE'
