What is storage capacity for a variable?

Hello.

Can anybody tell me how many characters a variable is supposed to hold?

The reason I ask is that I am trying to store a text article in a variable. It looks like a variable will hold only about 3,073 characters.

I just wonder if it's anything that I'm doing to limit the storage capacity.

the only limits have to do with php.ini's memory_limit value. I have had string variables hold contents much larger that that in the past, so its got to be a setting or a problem with the file itself or the os.

Thanks for responding. It may be my operating system. I've just got an older Dell computer with a Windows ME os.

What I'm doing is letting people put text into a form on page one, then go to page two. On page two I've got hidden fields with the variables. The text displays for them to read on the page before they submit it.

From page two they click submit. They've got to check an "authorize publish" button on page two before it will process the text and put it into the database. If they forget to check the "authorize publish" box it goes to a page three error page.

On page three I've got more hidden fields with the variables. They can click submit on page three and it sends them back to a page one (retry version).

Just now I ran another text. Im the hidden fields on page two one of the variables held 13,000 characters! But when I went from page two to page three the 13,000 character string got truncated.

Is there any kind of work-around that anybody knows about?

After testing a little bit more I believe it must be my script. I probably don't have the script written right.

What I've got is a header to re-direct the user back. First, I had a foreach loop and appended the string on the end of the header URL which conveyed the name/value pairs back to the retry page.

Next, I tried a foreach loop and inserted the variables into cookies. The variables got truncated with the cookies also.

I'll keep tinkering with it and see if I can get it straightened out.

i see, yeah the query string in the url is usually limted to about 1024 characters if i remember right, and probably headers are limited too. post would be the best way for sending large data or try sessions.
