format '5' as '00005'

how can I reformat a number (=id from a table) to a format of 5 numbers?
ex. 5 should become 00005

any help?

Check Zerofill for the DB field and make sure the max length is 5.

5 will become 00005, 4534 will become 04534 etc...

This will alter the data in your database, maybe I misunderstood what you are trying to do, so don't do it unless you want to change database data.

You can use printf() (or to format it to a string variable use sprintf). Example:

$id = 5;
printf('Number: %05d', $id);

The above would output something like this:

Number: 00005

Another alternative is the [man]str_pad[/man] function. (There are those out there who state the printf function is faster, though I've never tested them against each other. I'm just putting out another idea)

$id = 5;
echo $str_pad($id, 5, "0", STR_PAD_LEFT);
// Outputs: 00005
