wnat to do in both phpmyadmin & mysql view

hi board,
i've installed phpmyadmin, php, etc in the package XAMPP, but all the tutorials i read, save a few, show examples in the mysql dos window. I have tried unsuccessfully to configure it so mysql root is c:\ but instead it remains that i can't run it. 😕

can i keep XAMPP and install separate components for mysql etc., that wouldn't interfere with the general running, or is it either or?

i really just want to be able to choose which interface i use to administer tables as i;m only beginning and want to learn to use the console.

To use the PC console, you need to change the directory to the mysql bin directory.

In my case this means:

C:> cd c:\wamp\mysql\bin

C:\wamp\mysql\bin> mysql

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 12 to server version: 4.1.10a-nt

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

got that,. but how do i set this change of directory in xampp without upsetting the config of everything else., ??

can i open up console in default position that already points to the mysql bin?

just add that path to your system path. open a command prompt and do

set PATH=%PATH%;C:\wamp\mysql\bin

now you can type mysql from any directory and it will run the mysql command line utility.

If you've got phpmyadmin up and running then why would you want to use the dos command line tool??

And 4 out of 5 of those books are crap - we see some awfull examples of their code here.

hi Ramjet,

i want to use the console, as i prefer typing in code and it allows me to better understand some of the advice given in forums i've visited. it doesn't seem easier using phpmyadmin at the mo, probably because i ahve been looking at examples from mysql sites etc., and no books seem to presume that your using a package deal like xampp. i don;'t really want to be tied to package i suppose, and at least the console coding is universal.

i'm using the Larry Ullman book, sometimes looking at his forum as well, for code corrections and stuff. is this a recommended book , it's the only one i've got but any input greatly received.

Well, if you are just after learning sql then sure, use the command line. I assumed you were after building a db.

Don't know his book at all so I can't comment on it.
