Must upgrade php from 4.2.2 to 4.4

I have a friend who needs his versions of php upgraded on his dedicated server. He has SSH access, can someone please advise on how to do this.

Very simple - do exactly what he did for the install.

You might need to make adjustments if magic_quotes or the other commonly-used insecure settings are on. (I think it's "register_<something>", but for the life of me I cannot figure out what it is).
