Picture slideshows: automated and classic

I'd like to create two simple slideshows.

First: A slideshow that automatically cycles through say 20 pictures on the homepage of a website, with some kind of fading effect or something that makes it look smooth.

Second: A classic slideshow where you click forward/backward. Maybe someone has implemented a script from somwhere on the net already and has a link?

I'm not sure if these solutions even require php. I know I could achieve both in flash 2004, but I'd like to stay away from that because some people might not have the plugin.

Any thoughts? Maybe everyone has a flash plugin by now?

I'd pretty much give you a 99.9% guarantee that everyone has the flash plugin. If not that, you might want to look at some JavaScript implementations. Sites like DHTML zone or Internet.com have huge galleries of JS scripts.
