Change one word in a field

Hello,
Anyone know a good way to change one word in a VARCHAR field?

the fields have usually full sentences in them, and I want to change every occurrence of the word "uncommon" to "unc".

Any ideas by just using SQL?

UPDATE mytable SET mycolumn=REPLACE (mycolumn, 'uncommon', 'unc')
