create variable from loop

i have results echoed on a page. but i can't seem to create the variable in a loop;

for($i=0; $i<4; $i++){ 
$res[$i] ="what ever goes here $i";
}

and then

<? echo $res1 ?>
<? echo $res2 ?>
<? echo $res3 ?>
.... later in the html layout of the page...

i thought it was somink like this ${'res'.$i}

echo $res[1];
echo $res[2];
echo $res[3];

Or of course

 for($i=0; $i<4; $i++){ 
echo $res[$i];
}

Or somink like

echo implode( '', $res );
while( list( $k, $v ) = each( $res )){ echo $v; }
// ummmm
array_walk( $res, create_function( '$a, $b', 'print $a;' ));
