Upload 1 image, but create a thumb (not on the fly)

I know there is masses of stuff on image re-sizing on the forums, but I have searched and found nothing that quite answers my query......

I have a form that uploads a jpeg, and copies it to a directory where I hold all images.

I also have a directory where I hold corresponding thumbnail images of all the full size images.

I currently upload both the thumb, and the full size image.

How do I do the upload, say to a temporary place, copy to the folder that holds my images, then resize the temp image, save it - then copy that to the folder that holds the thumbnails?

(Why do I want to do this? well, the tumbnail gallery will load alot faster that if it generated the thumbs on the fly.......)

Uploaded files are already saved in a temporary location until you move them to where you want them. You can read that file before you move it. Bascially you need to do is move the thumbnail-generation code from where it is now to the upload-processing page, and have it make the thumbnail from the uploaded file. The save the thumbnail in its directory, and move the original to its.

have been back to php.net, and I had missed the function

imagecopyresampled()

is it just as simple as

imagecopyresampled($thumb, $image, 0, 0, 0, 0, $new_width, $new_height, $width, $height);

Will this create a file $thumb that I can then move/copy delete? Can't wait to get home and give that a go.... 🆒

No, $thumb is an image resource containing the thumbnail image; you'll need to use one of the functions like imagejpeg() or imagepng() to turn it into data of the appropriate format and save it.

But I'm all curious now: how were you resizing the images before?
