Designed a personalized newsletter, get rid of personalized info when forwarded??

Hi all,

I made a simple personalized newsletter with the ability to usubscribe, change email, swap html/text. All three options are in the footer of the newsletter.

Now I notice a problem when you (A) forward the newsletter to a friend (😎.

when your friend (😎 receives the newsletter all personalized data of person (A) still resists in the newsletter.

How can I prevent this from happening?

Something like delete all email in message when forwarding email???? or better yet get rid of the newsletter footer when forwarding??

Any tips???

not sure i understand. you are sending out an email to a user. that user is then forwarding that email to someone else. at that point you no longer have any control over the content of that email...or i am missing something obvious?

yep in a nutshell that's how I have set it up right now.

So there is no way to alter the content, I mean it is possible to change the newsletter image, because it is on my server.

if your email content conatins embedded images with absolute URL paths to your server then yes of course you change the source images but that will of course change the image for everyone viewing that image. i got the sense from your original post that you wanted to change the content dynamically per user after it has been sent.

Wacky idea.....

Store the recipients info in a database table
Logo image returned from a php script (using GD)
Script checks client info, if match (from stored recipient info) it's NOT been forwarded
If no match, it is a forwarded email
Script compiles image to suit

Doing this will depend on how recipients "subscribe" to the newsletter
If it's a web-form, then great - nab their IP, etc.

If your targetting people, then no-can-do

Same theory can be used for other personalised info, with a bit of forethought to the newsletter formatting (should be possible to dynamically generate the text elements from your server in some way)

Another option would be to create a custom "forward" script on your site, and in the e-mail write "to forward this message, click here" and link to your script. Although it's not guaranteed anyone will use it.

No offense, mate
but that wouldn't get used at all

given the option of clicking a link (which may do something dodgy)
or use their email software's forward button
people will use the email's forward (wouldn't you? 😉 )

Well, if they already signed up the receive the letter from the site, I think they'll trust it, yes? And that's why I wrote Although it's not guaranteed anyone will use it..
