.htaccess not doing anything!

I have WS_FTP LE. I uploaded this file with a .htaccess ext to the public_html dir in ASCII mode and wallah! Nothing works. I have WebStripper and I can still use it to download my site. That should not be, should it?

I even tried

but I can still view jpg images on my site. Am I doing something wrong? I even tried emailing my web host about it, they said they didn't know what is wrong.

Check that the following are properly configured in httpd.conf:

Where is that file? I can't find it.

It is an shared apache server running linux.

Chances are that your host does not permit users to set their own .htaccess, that is what Richie meant when he said check the conf file.

Chance are that you cannot read or edit the httpd.conf file either.

Chances are that your host employs w***ers in it's tech support if they don't know what your problem is.

It may be that you can set an .htaccess in a subdir but not in your document root. That is often the case with shared hosts. It is done to prevent you from locking yourself out of your webspace, to prevent you from modifying their mod-rewrite rules that give the mapping of your domain name to the specific part of the server's file system, and to prevent you granting yourself access to other parts of that file system.

Try it out in a subdir and see if it still does not work.

Still, no effect at all. I put it in my Images dir and put this in the .htaccess file again but I could still view all the .jpg images:

</Files>

And WebStripper strips my files from the dirs below the .htaccess file.

did you put the .htaccess file in the subdir as well? That is what I meant. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Yes, I had one in public_html and one in a subdir called Images. That was not working, so I deleted the one in public_html, but that didn't help.

Phone your host up and pester them untill you get to someone in tech support who knows what he is talking about ie 3rd line support. Best I can offer, sorry.

Thanks, that's a good idea. By the way, you are right about the service of the tech support. They usually don't know what the answers for alot of things are and never help much.
