Forcing a table to the top

Hey, I'm coding a layout right now and I'm trying to get a table with my nav menu to stay at the top of a page.

As my layout expands downward, the box goes down with it.

Anyone know what im talking about and how to fix it?

I think you can do this by putting it in a layer and setting it's position to relative floating.

I generally avoid layers though, as it's such a bloody faff to get them to render correctly in all browsers

If it's a nav bar, i recommend the DHTML Menu Builder from SourceTec - I've not used their 'floating' function yet, but it's only a matter of time. I've made some nice dhtml menus in that - check http://www.5ylac.biz for an example.

why suggest the hard way?

To align a table to stay at the top or whichever (I know this as I use such layouts all the time), add this to your <td> tag.

valign="top"

That tells it to vertically align your table to sit at the 'top" always, thus it won't be in the middle or the bottom (unless you change "top" to middle or bottom).

Since you using dreamweaver, just click the mouse inside the td that the table you want to be at the top is in, and then select Vert > Top in the properties area. Here is the picture to further guide you.

Good thinking Otikeu - but I suggest you trying that and seeing if the menu drops down to stay at the top of the page when the top of the table disappears !

well, I think he meant for his layout, which would be the navigation table for his layout. he is saying as the table expands, the table menu within the <td> moves as well, to the middle.

I'm sure if he wants it are the top of the page, he would justhave to put that attribute I mentioned within the <table> tag then. But, it would work in the <td> or <table> tag.

I took 'expand' to mean add content down the page and that when the page is scrolled, the nav bar remains at the top.

But this is a pointless argument really, since the originator hasn't replied since posting!

for the base code goto guistuff get their flash bar and copy the html code for it to stay where you want it then where the .swf is included put your content it's like a jigsaw puzzle jet spaghetti javascripts used to have a really cool site that utilised layers back in I.E.5.5 You can do some really cool effects with layers
