problem to set permission

I Hope you can help me....I am pretty a newbie to all ftp and having my
own site, and here my problem:
I am trying to set a permission to a file (common.php) that I have
already upload on my site, then with my ftp program I am trying to set
permission to 666 on that file. Then I got the message "500 'SITE chmod
777 common.php': command not understood "
why's that???? I have tried different ftp program with always the same
result...???

On windows, you don't chmod files 😉

Yes I am windows Xp....How else can I can without staring windows and still run ftp?

...the way I tried to change the permisssion is not by the command itsefl(chmod) ut I right click on the file, then check the boxes to get what I want, then when I click "enter" is then that I get that message...

What FTP program are you using? It sounds like you're using WS_FTP but I could be wrong.

I am using Core ftl_le but have also ws_ftp and Cute FTP neither of had worked...?

What is gmail invite?

A gmail invite is just that - an invite to Gmail. Gmail is a free webmail from Google which offers (currently) 2.4 gigabytes of storage (and it's increasing everyday!). The interface is really clean, nice, fast, and responsive, thanks to a lot of fancy, client-side JavaScript and AJAX. However, you need an invite to sign up for it. I've been given so many that I'm giving them out to anyone who asks because I don't know what to do with them!!

GAH! I said on windows, you don't chmod files, ie. it is impossible.
Some say 775 (read only) and 666 (write) works on windows but other than, the point I'm making is that on Windows, the only thing you need to do is go to windows explorer, right click a file, property and check the read only box or vice versa if you want write permission.

Yeah, krt explained it pretty well. I was just asking what FTP program you used because it sounded like mine. Sorry if I led you down the wrong path 😃

Krt, how else I can do it...???? I tough that if I use my ftp program, connect it to the server, then on the server site if I right click ont the file I want to change permission then clicktha appropriate little case then click ok, that would be right....but it doesnt allowe me, tell me more how to do it not using windows...

If it's a window server, there's no way to manage security perms over FTP. You'll need to RDP into it (or ask a server admin) to right-click your folder, click the security tab, and add the users and permissions that you want to the folder.
