[RESOLVED] delete files from server based on filename...

hey... I am not sure how to do this... but I need to open a folder on my server, then look at the files in the folder.... then if I find a file that meets a criteria - i want to delete it.

for example, I have a file list such as

1_hello.jpg
1_boo.gif
2_raaaa.gif
4_mad.jpg
etc etc

The numbers at the beginning indicate the userid and an image they have uploaded... I need to open the folder, tell the script that anything starting with a "1_" should be deleted....

any ideas?!

Make sure $file is the full absolute path to the file

if(ereg($pattern,basename($file)){
   unlink($file);
}

cool thanks - managed to find a bit of old code to go through the folder contents too.... so here's what ive done - and it seems to work 🙂

$directory = opendir("../images/");
  					while($filename = readdir($directory)) {
						$ext = substr($filename, 0,2);
						if ($ext == $this->id . "_") {
							unlink("../images/" . $filename); 
						}
					}

If you have a large number of members uploading files then the substr() function won't work properly because the length parameter used to determine the member id will be different for members 0-9, 10-99, 100-999, etc..etc.., so simply entering it as substr(0,2) won't work if you have a hight number of members uploading files.

Use explode instead:

 $directory = opendir('../images'); 
       while($filename = readdir($directory)) 
       { 
          $ext = explode("_", $filename);
          i f ($ext[0] == $memberId)  

          { 
            unlink("../images/" . $filename);  

          } 
       }
