Speed to lookup value

I am considering having a database of 8,000 IP addresses of search engine robots and other bots. If I put this in a MySQL database, how long would it take to lookup that IP address in the database to check whether it is a surfer or bot on the site? Any ideas?

I would only be querying the IP address against the 8,000 values in the MySQL database.

hard to say for sure but i couldnt imagine it taking more than a second. not worth worrying about.

When someone clicks a link on my site, it will go to a red.php that looks up in the IP database. If its a bot it stops. But if its a valid surfer it then gets redirected to the target site. So I am concerned if there is a delay as some surfers may decide to click their browser back button. Wish there was a way of finding out or some benchmark. I would have to buy the IP list so don't have it to test.

generate 8000 random 3 digit numbers, do this 4 times

Put them into word or excel and concatenate the four columns using a '.'

Now you have 8000 totally random IP-esque numbers!

How long?? Depends on your host platform more than anything else. But, I'm on a shared host - dunno how many other sites. I have 200K+ rows in multiple tables, run complex queries with grouping and aggregate functions, after running a user login check in each script, with multiple users, do complex manipulation of the extracted data in my script, and the whole script processes in 1-2 secs.

8000 record lookup? < 0.1 secs would be my guess. Unless you are on a server with pentium 2, 256K memory and slow IDE drives of course.
