Writing to image, not on

Is it possible to actually write to the image (equivalent of right click -> properties) with a set of meta tags or just anything at all? And if it is possible, is there an easy way to retrieving that data?

I don't want to put this stuff into a database... I want it in the image itself. So as they upload, it also writes to the image.

The properties.. comments, keywords, everything to do with the image.

Depends on the image format. Some provide support for metadata (that's the word you're googling for), some don't.

PHP provides an API for reading JPEG EXIF sections. Some of the user comments for those functions provide links to toolkits for writing them.
