Group registration

I'm working on a site right now for some friends of mine, and I need to setup a section that has user registration and group assignments.

I've been googling around for an open-source solution, so I wouldn't have to write it myself (since i'm pretty bad at php, and lazy too).

I need something that lets a user register an account, after registering they then can either create a group for their friends to join (with a size limit), or join an existing group.

It's for room assignments on a large trip we're trying to setup.

Does anyone have any recommendations for something that would make this really easy?

No, but I can give you some reccomendations on how to code the PHP and the database if you'd like.

Here is a site with a premade login system open sourced, but you need to know some PHP to be able to hook it up correctly to the rest of your site.
