Frequency Cap by IP

Hi! I am new here and i have a question.
I have a site running sponsored ads. But i need a frequency cap, i think thats the righ phrase. So the visitor (IP) should see the ads only x times in 24h.
There are several Javascripts out there to do that but i need it server side and without cookies.

I think this would be a bit a complicated script: get user IP, store it in text file,
check every new IP for an entry, remove entry after 24h... :bemused:

Any ideas?

Well, you've said it all really. You could use a database table instead of a text file.

But it's best you use cookies and you can set them to expire after 24 hours. The other reason for using cookies, is that IP will not really work well since some IP's like AOL will completely jump between networks changing the IP to something completely different.
