Format a date

ok this is probably really easy but i have no idea what to do
i am parsing a rss feed and its all good in the rss but the date comes back as a bit of a mess 2005-08-20T19:26:51+00:00 - this is how it is in the RSS feed source but if i view it in safari it seems to format nicely there so i know it can be done
i want to make it so that it just shows the date and time e.g. 20/08/2005 19:26

as far as i know i can use date() for that but...
theres a T in the middle for some reason (same in the actual feed) and when i tried to format it using date () it came up as december 31st 1969 :bemused:

also its an hour out due to daylight savings (i think) so is there any way i could deal with that too - or even better to cater for anyone who visits and format it in their local time zone
