Javascript + PHP

I am trying to assign a php variable to take the value from a textbox and i tried to transfer the value from the textbox to the php variable in javascript embedded inside a php script.

Apparently, it is not working and i must be doing something wrong. Can someone help me out here? Thanks

Javascript and PhP live in different worlds. UNLESS you use the technology known as AJAX, they are not able to communicate. you need to POST or GET the values from the browser (Javascript) to the PhP code.

What i am trying to do is to use a php page, process_extract_papers.php, to zip documents into zipfiles. The thing is if a zipfile gets more than 20mb, the system will fail because of the limited memory of 20mb that is allowed.

For example, if there is 40mb of documents, instead of zipping 40mb in one zipfile, i am going to split them up and zip them into 2 zipfiles. So after the person clicks on the extract next button, the page will refresh itself and begin to zip the last 20mb of the 40mb. Basically, i have 2 buttons, start download and extract next. I need to keep all the variables that i have used for the zipping the first 20mb.

I hope by letting you know what i am doing, it actually makes more sense. And maybe you could advise me on what i can do. I am wondering if i refresh the page, will all the functions inside run again?

I know it sounds weird and all, honestly i do not know what i am doing but trying to learn along the way. Got assigned to do some thing that i hardly have any knowledge of.
