Hi!

i hope someone would be able to help me :

i'm developping a mass mailer and triing to do something : when i send mail in mass (over 1000) it takes a long time and it's not "user friendly" at all because the user his stick on that page for a while., so what i would like to do it's to get all the informations i need to send the mail, redirect the user on a page and send the mail in "background" so the user could still navigate on the web site.

(i'm using PHPMailer for sending mail)

I've used [man]popen[/man] with great results (read the posted comments for all sorts of ideas on how to use it). Another route is to do something with the "at" command line scheduler which is typically a run-once scheduler. You could also go with crontab if you wish to schedule something to run periodically, but I don't think this will fit what you're looking for.

Search in the echo lounge for 'hidden functionality of php' and you'll find one way of running a script in the background without having to exec a different process. I'm sure I've explained how to do it with a separate process and exec, too, but not popen as I do all my experimentin' on a windows box and the cli version of php, and can easily hammer runaway scripts on the head.
