Scanning Folder

Is there any way I can use PHP to scan a folder (on the server) and determine:

1) how many files are in the folder, and
2) what the filenames are?

What have you tried so far? Some of the many filesystem functions? None of them tickle your fancy?

I had no idea where to start, but I booted up the doc and am looking through the Filesystem functions now. I'm sure I'll find something to suit my interests. 🙂 Thanks for pointing me to the right start.
