Selecting User Form Settings ...

Quick question ...

If im using a template engine(smarty) and i have a edit account page which provides the user options to change account settings .. and it's by a form , how could i display the current setting?

For instance ..

I have a form , that says " Allow Ratings " and the options are Yes , Or No , it's a drop down box.

I know i have to query the database , and find the users current setting , but then how do i display that setting in the drop down box?

If you have your rating set to " No " , and the options in the drop down box are Yes , and No , How can i make it show "No" when they view their edit account page?

If people dont understand the question , i can clarify what i mean ... is that why this has not recieved replys? this isnt about smarty , it's about forms ... im trying to figure out how to display the users current choice , from a database query , if the form has preset options

Yes and No are the choices from the drop down box in the form ..

So if the user choose's NO , and submits the form ... and i record NO in the database for his setting , the next time he views the page with the form , How could i make the form say "NO" and not "YES" , as YES is the first option on the form.

Hi leatherback , i tried that earlier today , and it was returning the value's twice .. for instance , if you choose NO , it would say
NO
NO
Yes

for the options in the box .. Is it supposed to show both option's , and also the current option? Is their a way to only make it show the 2 options , and have the selected option from the database query be the first one?

Please sghow th e code you have now for retrieving the data from fdatabase, and creating the box. Is probably a small bracket thingy

Ok , in my form html i have options like this

                      <option>Latino</option>
                      <option>African American</option>
                      <option>Pacific Islander</option>
                      <option>Indian</option>
                      <option>Middle Eastern</option>
                      <option>Mixed</option>
                      <option>Other / Not Specified</option>
                    </select>

Now .. if i query the database , and find out the my user is asian ... How can i make the form select asian , and not caucasian ... or if they where latino , how could i make it select latino , im using smarty so my output for their ethnicity is like {$ethnicity}.

Allow me to clarifiy what im trying to do .....

I have a edit account page , where users can edit their account info.

If they choose " Latino " , and update their profile , MYSQL will record their ethnicity as Latino ... Now .. Latino is not the first choice in that form list .. Caucasian is .. But i need it to be set to latino , so that the next time they visit the edit account page , they see their correct ethnicity ... ive done this , but it's dplaying twice ...

Thats the only way i can get it to display their proper ethnicity as the first choice , but then their ethnicity appears twice in the list .. 1 time for the choice they selected , another time b/c its an option in the list ...

Their has gotta be a way to make it display their ethinicity as the first choice in the list , and only display it one time.

I hope i didnt loose people ... i dont know how else to explain it.

Hm.. If you are coding your form to be retrieved from the database it would be a simple snippet.

You also forgot to place a value in the option list. The formal structure is:
<select name="">
<option value="">label</option>
</select>

What you could do:

// define an array, and give it the value selected to the selected country:

$selected_value = array(
$ethnicity => " Selected ");

// in the HTML form:
// consider storing your labels and values seperately. That way, if you want to change the spelling of a name, or the output format, you can just modify the label iu the table, and maintain the form

Im using the Smarty template engine , so i cant echo anything =[

Im not really sure how to do this using a template engine ..

example ... Lets say i have created a page that allows you to change your text color

a form with 3 values

Red
Green
Blue

you choose blue , and press update

It sends the update to SQL , and your color is now stored as blue.

Now , if you visit the update page again , how could i make your color appear as BLUE , and not red , since red is the first value?

Im using a template engine so i have to assign output variables like this
$smarty->assign('color',$color);

then in HTML i can call 'color' by using this {$color}

Im very confused on what to do

I am afraid I cannpo thelp you there: I do NOT use a template system called smarty. I write my own progs / sites. Sorry.

I write my own programs and sites too , smarty is the template engine created by the PHP group. It allows you to seperate presentation layer from logic.
It's not about smarty ... it really has nothing to do with smarty

its about selecting users choices and populating form drop down box's with the current choice.
