trouble connecting to db even w/localhost

I've installed mysql on my server, setup the db's and created users. I can connect from remote pc's through ftp programs like mysql front without problems.

I have 2 websites, one on the same server as the mysql server and one on my old webhost.

On my old webhost I've tried changing the config so it has the new ip but it wont connect.

On the new site I've tried changing it to localhost but both sites dont connect.

it is a phpnuke and mambo site.

are you getting any errors? i would try and setup a connection script without phpnuke, and see if we cant generate an error. try this... (changing your user / pass).

This is a new install of mysql 4.1
mysql-essential-4.1.13-win32.msi

downloading mysql-essential-4.1.14-win32.msi right now.

you have to use the old passwords thing in your my.ini, put it in the mysqld section, like so

# SERVER SECTION
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------

# The following options will be read by the MySQL Server. Make sure that

[mysqld]

old_passwords # this or old-passwords seems to work

I just added
old_passwords # this or old-passwords seems to work

right under the [mysqld] and it still does not work. What does it mean old passwords... I mean, I just created new accounts and everything. I dont quite understand the problem.

Have you rebooted mysql?

Edit: Since Mysql 4.1 it's updated to gazillion bit passwords instead of the relatively short (in modern teknolidgee) ones from before - this tells it to use the old ways, ways that php understands.

Yeah, I just now stopped and restarted the service. Still comes up with the same thing.

I just now installed MySQL Administrator 1.1 and logged in. When I browsed to Startup Variables on the left navigation, I choose the security tab on the right pane, I saw that Use old passwords was not checked. So, I checked it, applied the changes. Then I went to the services stopped mysql, waited a little bit, then restarted it. I still get the same client does not support authentication protocol.

I've even gone as far as removing the password but it still doesn't work. 😕

the easiest solution would be to install a newer (5.x.x) version of php.

I originally had php 5 installed but it wouldn't work

lemme add that if I removed the users password it DID work when I made that test connection script, but it didn't work for the phpnuke site.
