Need help chosing developer friendly payment gateway

Hello,
I am creating a website for a client and he wants to charge for subscriptions via credit card payments. I have no experience using credit card gateways so I am sort of worried about creating an account which is able to access my bank account, as well as charge me for each test transaction etc.

My question is if the are any gateways out there that will allow me to create a developer account just for creating and testing apps which use their interface. Can't use paypal/sandbox because the site is an escort directory and therefor is not allowed due to their mature audience policy.

The last payment gateway I coded with directly wasworldpay and they had a test instance which you could develop and test against. I haven't tried it in a while, though, so things may have changed.

I just signed up with authorize.net. I'll let you know how it goes.

Paypal were ok, easy to implement. They have a sandbox system for testing too.
