username & password generator--urgent!!

hi,
can anyone help me with the coding of username & password?
basically, I need to extract the first 2 letters of 3 strings passed and set it as username, then generate a random 4 digit password with PHP, I've tried that in java, but ot sure how to do that in PHP? I've also searched some forum, but didnt get much. can some one plz kindly help me?

$pass = rand(1000, 9999);
