sha1 or md5?

I read the manual.

The manual doesn't say which is better. But someone's comments in md5 chapter suggest sha1 is better.

Any expert opinions? Should I use sha1 instead of md5?

i am no expert in encryption. but what is the reason why they both exist? is it because md5 was invented earlier than sha1? if so, sha1 is likely to be stronger, in which case one might prefer it. if not, how do you plan to use either sha1 or md5?

there is even SHA2 method by now ( not in php yet )
