Using sessions instead of $HTTP_REFERER

I wanted to create a back link to a catalog page which i have created. The simple solution i found was to use $HTTP_REFERER, alas this did not work to well with some browsers. I was looking around and was told that sessions were the way to go.

For your perusal im posting a link to my catalog page.

Once you click on a garment, it will then take you into a description page. On there i have a button that says RETURN TO CATALOG. On my test maching it works fine, on the web though, it doesnt return to catalog. This was all done using firefox btw. Internet Explorer is no better.

My question for the forum is this, If sessions are the right way to go, can you point me to a tutorial which can help in this matter. All the tutorials that i have found talk mostly about logging in and such, something which i do not wish to implement. Also, if there other PHP ways to take care of this matter i would love to hear your input.

So I'm assuming the 'RETURN TO CATALOG' catalog page could vary. Obviously, if it's always the same page you could just hard code the link on the page.

You could use sessions to record 'thispage' and 'lastpage'. On each page viewed update your session variables.

$_SESSION['lastpage'] = $_SESSION['thispage']; // 'lastpage' is now what 'thispage' used to be
$_SESSION['thispage'] = $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']; // update 'thispage'

Ok, i see what you have done and my implementation of the code will be as follows.

On the main page with all the garments i will put this code snippet which you have given me.

On the item page i will put the code which tells it to go back to the main page???

Have this code on each of your pages. (Obviously, after using session_start().) The page they came from will be in $_SESSION['lastpage'].

I understand how it works, unfortunately its not working. Lemme play around a little and see whats going on.
