[RESOLVED] mysql_free_result()

Can this function be used with mysql_fetch_array , or only mysql_result ... The manual doesnt mention that.

You use it AFTER you've already fetched the data by any of the fetch functions. It's only really needed if you've got more SQL calls to do within the same script execution to help free up results table storage/memory.

If you're script is just doing one query and ending, then it's not even needed because PHP/MySQL will free the results anyway.

What do you mean by "used with" and what do you think mysql_free_result() does?

First off , i understand what your telling me about mysql_free_result

I use it ..

I just never used it on an array fetch such as mysql_fetch_array or mysql_fetch_assoc

When attempting to free a mysql_fetch_assoc i was getting php fatal warning's about the mysql result link was not valid ..

But it works on a mysql_fetch_array ...

Maybe it cant be used in a while loop , perhaps thats my problem

mysql_free_result = free the mysql resource ID associated with the query you performed ...

Just wasnt sure if it could be used on mysql_fetch_assoc ...

As mentioned, you can use it if you want AFTER you've read all the rows from the results table using ANY of the fetch functions (which includes mysql_fetch_assoc). The manual page's example even shows it using mysql_fetch_assoc():

I assume by "while loop" you mean the loop to fetch each row from the query performed. So, of course you would not put the mysql_free_result() in the loop. It would come after or outside the while loop. Put within the while loop it would free all the results data and the resource ID would be lost and hence the message you're getting.
