I just installed SP2. I also installed the hotfix kb884020. But, I cannot get to localhost. The web browser churns away but cannot deliver the page (but also does not deliver an error message.)

Windows Firewall is turned off as I run Norton Internet Security. NIS is configured to allow for localhost and previous to the install of SP2, I was developing a php/mysql application and had no problems displaying my pages on localhost.

Should I remove Windows XP SP2 or do I have other options? Thanks to whomever might respond.

If you are running any antivirus script blocking you might try turning it off while testing.

If you ping localhost does it resolve to 127.0.0.1?

Have you run any recent spyware and antivirus scans?

      I do ping to [127.0.0.1]

I disabled the Norton anti-virus and the Norton Internet Security, but that didn't change results. Spyware and anti-virus scans clean.

The kb884020 fix provided by Microsoft that supposedly fixes the problem connecting to the localhost would not properly install for me. I did get it to install in safe mode but it obviously didn't fix the problem.

After the install of sp2, I connected to localhost once (and retrieved my data from mysql correctly). But there were seven more updates that Microsoft's auto-update suggested that I make and after that, my iis and my connection to localhost went dead. I can't even stop iis because it times out.

I do appreciate your help and your suggestions. I may end up un-installing sp2.

For some moral support, IIS/asp works fine on a couple XP Pro SP2 computers I have. And these were updated to SP2 via windows update without causing any problems with IIS.

There is a kb article somewhere about how to reset all the IIS permission settings to the install defaults, permission problems are often a cause of problems with IIS.
