search engine: while search for "oman" returns "woman" also what can i do..?

i have a small search engine but while i search for "oman" i get the results with keywords oman,omans,omanisation etc

all the results are fine but problem is it also returns records which contains woman and i know the reason is becouse i have given in
MySQL query " like '%oman%' "

if i change that to '%oman' or 'oman%' or 'oman %' etc then it works okey but another problem is it may not returns the resulst like omanies,or oman's etc.

can u suggestme any solution for this kind of problem

I think you have to select only this:

... col LIKE 'oman%'

this will select all records where the word starts with "oman"

my problem is not specific to "oman" but the similar situations.

and in your query it only fetches the articles which begins with oman and it will ignore if oman in any other position of the sentence.

i can achieve that also by giving like 'oman%' or like ' oman%'.

here my concern is there any generic solution for this kind of problem .

and what i want is some help to create a good search engine using MySQL and PHP.

please send me some good links related to this.

i already have one with Search engine with following feature

Search Postion

1)search title only

2)search all article etc

Search Type

1)search Exact Phrase
2)Search All Word

3)Search Any waor

and this is working good also but still i want to make it more and more better.

so kindly suggest some good articles or tips to make a very good search engine.

what about full text search..?

i used it but i experienced s alot fo problem with full text search and the current one is workign better than that.

Does the regexp syntax MySQL uses in its regexp-matching function have a word-break operator like preg_match()'s \b (\boman matches "oman" and "oman's" and "omanies" but not "woman")?

I think it does, but the syntax is different according to the manual:

[[:<:]] , [[:>:]]

These markers stand for word boundaries. They match the beginning and end of words, respectively. A word is a sequence of word characters that is not preceded by or followed by word characters. A word character is an alphanumeric character in the alnum class or an underscore (_).

You could add some MySQL full text indices and search those rather than the actual data. I think partial word matches get ignored.

Yeah, but then searching for "oman" would miss "omanis". But, then, how is a computer supposed to know that "oman" should match "omanis" and not "woman" - or that "tex" should match "latex" but not "textile"?
