forum?

I've seen many variations of this forum on many web sites, it looks as long as I have PHP there is no reason I can't have one too. Is it free and can you point me in the direction so I can learn to set one of these bad boys up myself?

The copyright notice at the bottom of the page says what software this is 🙂. But there are certainly other forum packages out there. phpBB being the one with the highest profile.

phpBB has had some security issues in the past, so much so that some hosting companies are no longer allowing it. Chalk it up to whatever you like (poor code? popular program being targeted more than others? busy development team?) as there are many opinions on the matter. It is popular and there are many hacks for it, so you can easily do just about anything with it. If you do go with it I would suggest checking your version very often and updating as soon as possible if a new one is available.

Invision also has a free version, I think. Not sure if vbulletin does.

XMB, is not very good, however many developers broke away from XMB and for some reason all went out and developed manny different forums...just search FREE MESSAGE BOARd or something like that 🙂

I have used SOOP Portal in the past. This is ASP based, using either Access or SQL database. Although the next version is still going to be written in ASP, it is supposed to have a MySQL option which would make it easier/cheaper to find hosting for it. I am not using it now because I couldn't afford the ASP/SQL hosting anymore. 🙁

I have heard rumors that support for Invision is not all that great. I don't know if it's true or not, but I have seen it posted in more than one place, by different people.

I have been testing phpBB at the moment, but also like what I have seen of the Simple Machines offering as well. For me it's a toss up between them at the moment.

Definately on the dark side ASP is. Use PHP you must to attain true lightness
