GD2 compressing images?

Is it possible to compress images with GD2 to save on bandwidth?

technically jpegs, gifs, and pngs are compressed images, they are just bitmaps with different compression algorithms run over them. you can create jpegs with lower quality to reduce size.

I was just wondering if it was possible to compress with GD2. I have a gallery script that I made from a tutorial and it uses GD2 and php to upload the paths to mysql and copies the images (uploads) to a folder on my account. But if there was a way to automatically compress them it would save me time of having to redownload them, photoshop them, then reupload them.
